April 10

Carpenter Bee Management
Afraid to go outside?

Carpenter Bees can be very intimidating. Here are four ways to help keep these annoying pests managable.

Step #1
Do not have any exposed wood near the home. Painting exposed wood will keep these pests from realizing that there is wood there at all. Staining wood may help but not as much as paint. If you choose stain give two generous coats of a stain sealant.

Step #2
Pick your ornamentals carefully. Some trees and shrubs attract more bees than others. Holly shrubs, fruit trees, roses and others attract bees. Maples and evergreens are more neutral when it comes to bees.

Step #3
Treat nests with boric acid or diatamacious earth and plug them. If you are not comfortable doing this try to find a local exterminator who will. If you live in Raleigh-Durham area you can visit http://alchemypestcontrol.com

Step #4
Seal all holes, gaps, cracks, or crevices that may lead to exposed wood inside your home. It is best to do this before April so you don't have these scary creatures flying around while your doing it.
